About the Movie
Director : D.J. Caruso
Released : 2002
Staring : Val Kilmer, Vincent D’Onofrio, Adam Goldberg
After witnessing the murder of his wife in a botched drug deal, jazz musician Danny Parker (Val Kilmer) descends into the methamphetamine subculture of Los Angeles as an informant for two hardened, occasionally bumbling LAPD detectives. Using the alias “Tom Van Allen,” he immerses himself in this dangerous world, while secretly hunting for his wife’s killers. As he does, he becomes involved with a variety of unsavory characters.
Among them is Pooh-Bear (Vincent D’Onofrio), an eccentric, sadistic methamphetamine dealer with a penchant for gruesome theatrics. As Danny/Tom gets deeper into the drug scene and further from his past as a musician, he meets Jimmy The Finn (Peter Sarsgaard), a fast-talking addict, and becomes entangled with his neighbors, all of whom have their own secrets and agendas.
Throughout the film, the distinction between Danny’s two personas becomes increasingly blurred, challenging the viewer’s perception of reality and identity. As the story unravels, the true motive behind Danny’s descent into the drug underworld becomes apparent, leading to a series of shocking revelations and a gripping climax.
Set against the backdrop of the Salton Sea, a desolate, post-apocalyptic looking saline lake in California, the movie uses this haunting setting to underscore the bleakness and decay in the characters’ lives.
The film combines elements of dark comedy, suspense, and tragedy, and it’s a deep dive into themes of redemption, identity, and the lengths to which a person might go to right the wrongs of their past.
